An Olympic-Sized Bid?

Federal District, GS, with additional reporting from Liebchen City, SH, Edie City, GS, and Schatzchen City, PS (TST) -- There are reports, as yet not officially confirmed, that the federation government and the recently organized Schnauzerlands Olympic Committeee have submitted proposals to the regional olympic games bid committee to host events in a proposed global athletic event similar to the recently concluded First Winter Games held in Commerce Heights, but involving warm weather "summer" sports.

Sources indicate that the schnauzerlands are proposing to host track and road cycling, beach and indoor volleyball, rowing, and a demonstration sport, said to be a long-distance "tour" cycling event. Said one source who refused identification for the record, "the idea is to take advantage of the upgraded and new constructed facilities that can handle the large crowds such events would bring."

The tour cycling proposal would start at the traditional capital of Liebchen City on the Great Schnauzer River in the western schnauzerlands. and involve a route that would include at least some of the schnauzerland island nations, across the eastern schnauzerlands to Edie City. If the work can be completed in time, then the tour route would then cross the Schnauzer Dominions, into Mikitivity into the host city at the regional capital in the Free Land of the IDU.

Dominion MPs attend first session

Federal District, GS (TST) -- The 100 members of the Federation Parliament representing the Schnauzer Dominions have been formally installed in office, completing the final stage of the accession of the Schnauzer Dominions into the schnauzerlands federation.

"We welcome the newest members of the schnauzerlands family into this hall and into the government," noted the federal Chancellor as the new members were administered their official oaths of office. The chancellor appeared to be pleased, as well, by the enhanced majority his administration now enjoys within the federation Parliament as a result of the special by-election in the Schnauzer Dominions, created by its residents from the failed state of Flankia on the 1st of January. The Federalist Movement, the heart of the governing coalition, saw its share of members increase from 205 to 285. The left-wing Democratic Social Party failed to gain any seats from the Dominions, remaining at 89 seats and lost its status as the official opposition to the conservative Union Party which gained 13 seats (from 77 to 90.) Likewise, the pro-environmentalist Green Party failed to win additional seats in the Schnauzer Dominion by-elections, and remained at 65 seats. The defense-oriented Republic Movement party, a part of the governing alliance, gained the remaining 7 seats in the Dominions, with a total of 40 seats. The coalition of small parties and independents, with 31 seats, remained part of the government which now enjoys a 121-seat majority in the expanded Parliament of 600 members, with the addition of the Greens in the revamped majority coalition.

The Chancellor announced that a substantial investment would be made in the Schnauzer Dominions to restore and upgrade education, health, transportation, social and other services, facilities, and infrastructure to meet the levels of the five other nations of the federation. "Now that the Dominions have reorganized their local governments into the township based system used elsewhere in the schnauzerlands, and have elected their local government officials, we can complete the restoration of a normal life in that territory that was once Flankia. If history is a guide, our investment of public moneys now will generate widespread economic growth and prosperity throughout the Schnauzer Dominions. We note many federation-basis businesses have already commenced their investment plans for the Dominions and that economic activity and employment have grown at an astonishing rate since the accession was proposed six months ago."

General elections for the reconstitued Parliament are not scheduled to be held before late 2010.

New Schnauzerlands Parliament to Convene

Federal District, GS (TST) -- The Schnauzerlands Election Commission has certified the final results of the December 8th parliamentary elections, completing a process to elect a federal parliament from newly consolidated urban and metropolitan townships, in a major shift of political power among the various political movements within the Schnauzerlands.
According to the official tally, the centrist Federalist Movement won 205 seats in the new parliament. The leftist Democratic Social Party won 89 seats, while the conservative Union Party won 77 seats. The environmentalist Green party showed significant gains, and now hold 65 seats in the new parliament. The defense-oriented Republic Movement won 33 seats, and various smaller parties and independents captured the remaining 31 seats in the 501-member body. By tradition, the non-affiliated Parliament Speaker was re-elected without opposition. Needing only 46 members to form the next administration, the Federalist Movement is expected to re-nominate the incumbent Chancellor for election to a new 5-year term, and would use a combination of Green, Republican, independent and minor parties to form a governing coalition of about 325 to 330 seats. The new Federation Parliament is expected to convene shortly after the New Year's holiday celebrations next weekend.

Federation Parliament Ends Session

Federal District, GS (TST) – The Federation Parliament of the schnauzerlands adjourned its semi-annual session after adoption of the Federation budget and final approval of major government initiatives, including the multinational transportation system plans introduced last month.
Among other notable legislation adopted during the session:
  • authorization for townships to merge into urban townships or metropolitan townships, based upon geographic contiguity and population destiny; Such consolidations would allow more flexibility and cost efficiencies in providing public services for law enforcement, education, utilities, and mass transit systems,

  • an electronic transactions law that will authorize the use of electronic technology for business, financial, legal, and government transactions, including electronic signatures by individual citizens and business entities,

  • expansion of national lotteries to fund undergraduate and graduate college educational programs, and funding of technology for primary and secondary schools at the township level, and

  • standardized codes for construction of public facilities and buildings that might be used for emergency management activities.
The Federation Parliament will return to the capitol for its next session following township elections in late October. Many townships are expected to vote on consolidation proposals; while the number of township delegates to Parliament will remain unchanged, delegate district boundaries may be changed in some of the newly consolidated township districts to recognize legal requirements that delegate districts within a township have as close to equal populations as practicable.

Edie's Ratters Return Home Disappointed

Edie City, SH (TST) – The Edie City Ratters returned home last night after the team was eliminated in the opening rounds of the IDU Football Tournament in Groot Gouda, after a controversial opening game marred by unexplained scoring disputes. The Ratters then lost their remaining two games in the opening round, and were eliminated after Wednesday’s games.

Angry fans have been returned to the schnauzerlands, especially the Ratters’ home city, loudly complaining about the “horrific” scoring disputes in the opening game. Notwithstanding the media reports in both Adam Island and the schnauzervolk nations concerning the outcome of the first match, the official results were flip-flopped. There have been numerous requests from attendees who were returning to Edie City asking the schnauzervolk league officials to investigate the situation. (Since the teams are privately owned and operated, the matter does not come under government jurisdiction.)

According to the Schnauzervolk League commissioner, "we will have to be convinced that the officiating will meet generally accepted standards of objectivity, neutrality, and skill before we will participate in future tournaments."

Sports Teams Have a Building Boom

Schatzchen City, PS (TST)—Play Ball! Goal! Touchdown! Three-Pointer! These will be heard a lot more frequently throughout the schnauzerlands after professional sports leagues and local governments in many metropolitan areas throughout the schnauzerlands announced plans to construct sports and entertainment complex facilities. “We want to take advantage of the decisions by the Federation and national governments for improvements in transportation throughout the Federation, as well as play a significant role in enhancing tourism and recreation opportunities,” said Helmut von Black, mayor of Liebchen City, the oldest metropolitan city in the schnauzerlands. Teams from professional leagues for four different types of football, baseball, and basketball, as well as university-level teams plan to use the new facilities.

According to the plans, multi-purpose facilities for indoor and outdoor sports will be built, with professional teams adopting the various facilities as their home arenas. For example, many of the cities will include a shared outdoor stadium for baseball and Oz-Rules Football, a separate outdoor facility that can be used for tackle rule and soccer rule football, and an arena for basketball and indoor rule football. Many of the complexes will also include either a natatorium, or a track and field stadium that can be used for concerts and other events.

“Schnauzervolk are very sports-minded, competitive people. Having such a vast network of sports facilities in place will make it possible to attract world level sporting events, and make many schnauzerland locales a even more popular destination for residents and international visitors alike,” said Erick von Leader, mayor of Kinderlieb City, KL. The facilities are being paid without the use of government tax revenue, although land is being donated in the various cities involved, and some areas may need to construct mass transit, railway or limited highway access facilities in connection with a local project. Team and league owners have contributed funding and obtained private financing for the construction of the various multi-stadia projects.

T.C. Adam comes ashore

Edelweiss City, SS (TST) – Tropical Cyclone Adam came ashore near this northern metropolitan township overnight, with 135 km/hour winds, and heavy rains. While isolated flooding was reported, there were few reports of injuries or loss of life following mandated evacuations of islands and low-lying areas
The weather system was downgraded to a tropical depression as it continued to move inland and was expected to dissipate before the tropical system reached the Black Mountains in the southern portions of the western schnauzerlands. Local emergency management agencies were still assessing property damage in the affected townships, and utility crews had initiated repairs to power lines, water services and natural gas services. “We’re prepared to bring in permanent replacement housing, food services, and medical assistance where required in the affected areas,” said a Schnauzervolk Emergency Management Agency spokesperson. “We expect damage assessments to be completed this evening.”
Tropical Cyclone Adam was the first tropical system to come ashore in the schnauzerlands since Tropical Cyclone Jase struck the Port Rose area 13 years ago.
